Each is a good choice for a hunting and outdoor knife, but they have different qualities. The harder and tougher a blade is, the longer it will hold its edge.īroadly speaking, most manufacturers use one of three types of steel to make their blades: Carbon, stainless, and tool steel. The specific alloy in a knife blade dictates its key properties, including its hardness, or resistance to deformation under pressure toughness, or the resistance to abrasion and corrosion resistance. If you’ve shopped for a knife before, then you know how specific manufacturers can get about the materials they use to make their blades. If emergency preparedness is a priority for you, don’t be afraid to take a class or simulate a survival scenario next time you go camping to practice skills such as shelter-building and primitive fire-starting to see how you employ a knife in the “real world.” (If you also plan to carry a pocket knife, that blade can cover more delicate work.) You can also use it to move hot cookware on and off your campfire.Īn urban user will likely prioritize cutting and self-defense (be sure to check your local knife carry laws) while a wilderness adventurer will prioritize the bushcraft abilities of a knife. If you’re only carrying one blade, you’ll want it to be both large and versatile enough to serve as a kitchen knife, chopping meat and vegetables. You might use it to drive stakes, dig in hard earth, or self-defense. A longer knife can also be a useful tool for poking and stoking a fire, or dressing wild game when in-season. Obviously, cutting tasks are paramount to any knife’s utility but there are many other ways to employ a survival knife in the field. When shopping for a survival blade, you should start by considering how you may use it, from tasks you expect will come up, like hacking branches, to unlikely, but possible needs like shaping raw wood to build an impromptu shelter. As part of that work, I keep tabs on the latest and greatest from the world’s big knifemakers. Still, I've always needed a good, durable knife, which has led to me test and review them professionally for several years for Popular Mechanics and other publications. My survival knife activity has trended more practical as I’ve gotten older, like extended hunting and backpacking trips in the Colorado Rockies. My younger brother and I subjected ourselves to voluntary stints living and sleeping in the woods, building shelters, camp kitchens, and even dams. The Expert: I’ve been using knives for survival, both simulated and real, since I was kid.

The hull has sufficient rocker to allow it to nearly turn on a dime, great for maneuvering in tight coves and other somewhat restricted spaces. Although I have two other kayaks, I find this one to be my first choice 98% of the time, partly due to its somewhat lighter 44 lb weight. The Expression 11.5 is perfect for use on our local WV lakes and quiet streams. All in all I'm very happy with this little kayak! Not a big deal if it's just you using it but it would be a hassle if different people were in and out of it. My only negative point is that the footpegs don't have extensions on them to enable them to be adjusted while in the boat you have to adjust them before getting in. I'm 6'0" and 170 pounds and fit easily in the boat and I don't have the footpegs set all the way forward indicating a taller person would fit as well. The 44 pound weight is very reasonable and cartopping the boat is no problem. I have enough room in the cockpit for a couple items including a small dry bag behind the seat. The boat feels very stable though I don't push my luck with testing that out. The skeg is very helpful for photography and bird-watching since, like most smaller kayaks, the boat will turn into the wind when you stop paddling. I have no trouble paddling it in a straight line when it's calm out and when the breeze picks up the skeg can be lowered to minimize fighting the wind. I've been paddling for five years in a much longer kayak and the Perception Expression's size makes it very maneuverable which has made exploring small inlets and coves a lot of fun. I've been out kayaking in this boat five times now. It is a well built, feature rich kayak that will serve me well for many years to come! I have been paddling it now for a couple of seasons. For me, this boat is a perfect crossover. This boat serves a primary use as a day-tripper, since I still own another kayak for extended touring and rougher, bigger water conditions, though this boat could be used for a night out on the river with room in the stern hatch and copious amount of space up in the bow for dry bags. Also, the skeg does not need to be fully deployed to be effective, just drop what is needed to keep tracking in check. With the included skeg, this boat tracks like an arrow when conditions are right to use it. It paddles extremely well in calm to faster moving water, wind and chop, and even in big lake rollers. Paddling small to large inland lakes, streams and rivers, and even our Great Lakes. I live in Michigan and primarily use it around our State. I had been looking to purchase a kayak that could perform well in many paddling conditions. I think this is a unique kayak filling a market niche that other manufacturers have missed. My modifications have shifted the focus closer to touring kayak and away from rec kayak. It is really a great kayak and fun to paddle. I added a float bag sourced from NRS to the bow to increase flotation and displace water in case of a capsize. It forces you to use better paddling mechanics and makes it easier to use a spray skirt and facilitates self rescues. I replaced it with a back band sourced from Perception that I find more comfortable than the high back seat. I don't like the high back seat because it interferes with spray skirts and gets in the way if you have to do a self rescue. It is far more capable than the typical rec kayak, being built like a touring kayak. It also makes it very maneuverable and agile while the drop-down skeg makes it track straight and true, something that many short kayaks don't do well. Its small size and light weight make it easy to handle, transport and launch. The class was rated as the second best in the country behind Georgia by the 247Sports Composite, and the best class in the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes signed a total of 26 recruits. Instead, they received a bid to the Cotton Bowl Classic where they defeated USC 24–7. However, despite an 11–2 record, they failed to receive an invitation to the College Football Playoff. He underwent surgery and elected not to return to the team, instead focusing on recovering for the 2019 NFL Draft. Defensive star and pre-season All-American lineman Nick Bosa suffered a groin injury during the game against TCU. Wide receiver Parris Campbell led the team with 1,063 receiving yards and a Big Ten-leading 12 receiving touchdowns. Dobbins and Mike Weber combined for over 2,000 yards rushing. Haskins was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, finishing in third. The team was led offensively by quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who led FBS with 4,831 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns, both of which set school records by wide margins. The Buckeyes won the game to finish the year at 13–1, and were ranked third in the final polls. In the weeks before the game, Urban Meyer announced that he would retire at the end of the season, and the Rose Bowl would be his final game as head coach. The team was invited to the Rose Bowl to play Pac-12 Conference champion Washington. Ohio State defeated West Division champion Northwestern in that game convincingly, 45–24, but in the final College Football Playoff rankings of the year, the Buckeyes were ranked sixth, leaving them just outside the playoff for the second consecutive year. The Buckeyes won their remaining regular season games, however, and secured a spot in the 2018 Big Ten Football Championship Game after defeating rival No. Ohio State rose to second in the AP Poll, but suffered a devastating loss on the road to Purdue, 49–20. After Urban Meyer's return, Ohio State won their following four games, including a close win on the road over then-No. 15 TCU in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Buckeyes won each of their three games under Ryan Day to open the season, including a victory over then-No. Day acted as the head coach during Meyer's suspension. After a lengthy investigation, Meyer was suspended for three games for poor handling of the situation. Shortly before the season, head coach Urban Meyer was placed on administrative leave due to allegations that he was aware of domestic violence incidents involving former wide receivers coach Zach Smith. They were led by head coach Urban Meyer in his seventh and final season at Ohio State. This was the Buckeyes' 129th overall season and 106th as a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes played their home games at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The 2018 Ohio State Buckeyes football team represented Ohio State University during the 2018 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The right-of-way (ROW) fencing along Highway 189 is almost exclusively netwire which creates a movement barrier for pronghorn. This conclusion is backed up through vehicle collision reports from WYDOT, and these movements are exhibited from collared mule deer, both from the Uinta and Wyoming Range mule deer herds. They’re a tool to minimise impacts of road projects that have wide community support.ġ0 million animals are hit on our roads each year.Mule deer and pronghorn are negatively impacted along this stretch of Highway 189. And we shouldn’t use their effectiveness as a justification to run highways through pristine areas. Underpasses are not a panacea for impacts on wildlife. At present, there’s a great deal of monitoring sitting in expensive but unpublished reports from consultants. To figure out how to make underpasses even more effective, we need more publicly available research. In the future, it could be possible to use cattle-grid type structures to stop animals like koalas getting around fences and onto the roads. It’s very expensive to retrofit underpasses into existing roads, which is why we have to focus on priority areas. What we need is to prioritise areas where underpasses are possible, where threatened species exist and roadkill rates are high. These fences don’t work if there are intersections, freeway off ramps or driveways. You also need roadside fences, to prevent animals taking the shorter but much more dangerous path across the highway. For an underpass to be installed, you need the road to be adequately elevated. Not all ground-dwelling species of wildlife will find underpasses to their liking, but many do.Ĭould we retrofit underpasses to highways with very high roadkill rates? That depends. Underpasses are a useful tool to enable wildlife to move across landscapes with roads. These observations suggest potential prey may be avoiding the underpasses when foxes are about. We also found foxes were less often detected on nights when potential prey were using the underpasses. But on average, there was a gap of over three hours between detecting foxes and bandicoots or pademelons, and over four hours between foxes and wallabies. We expected to detect foxes close in time to prey detection. Safe passage: we can help save koalas through urban design Of the three underpasses used by foxes, one particularly favoured by foxes was not favoured by bandicoots and pademelons, the potential prey. At Port Macquarie, foxes were detected at three underpasses, while being absent from two. What we observed didn’t match these predictions. If the hypothesis was correct, foxes should be more common in the underpasses than in the forest, foxes should focus their activity at underpasses where potential prey are more abundant and the timing of use of underpasses by foxes and potential prey should coincide.Įven koalas were found to use underpasses. We tested the prey-trap hypothesis by testing three predictions. But of these, only foxes were detected frequently enough to be a potential concern. We detected red foxes, feral cats and dingoes using these underpasses. This idea – known as the “ prey-trap hypothesis” – suggests predators will be drawn to places where they can easily pick off unsuspecting animals funnelled into the confined space of an underpass. Many people believe underpasses increase predator risk. Roadside fences develop holes and need to be repaired to maintain their value. Only four roadkills (two eastern grey kangaroos, one red-necked wallaby and one brushtail possum) were reported to the local animal welfare group for this road segment over a three year period encompassing our study. We found they were not avoiding the underpasses, because they were detected infrequently in the adjoining forest.ĭo underpasses with fences reduce or eliminate wildlife roadkill? Anecdotal evidence for our study road at Port Macquarie suggested roadkill rates were very low. We were particularly interested in whether the endangered koala would use the underpasses. Many animals made use of the underpasses, such as: (clockwise from left) rufous bettongs, lace monitors, red foxes and koalas. To see the path nodes follow the steps as shown. This is what you can also use to outline text in GIMP. To get a more accurate result, you can refine even further the outline by working with the path nodes. You may need to go a bit back and forth between the draw foreground and draw background adjustment to minimize the work for the next step. Again, you don’t need to as far as you can with the precision. You can fine tune the process by selecting the draw background option, to adjust the initial rough outline. When you release your mouse it should show up like the example. You can also change the foreground colour prior to selecting the foreground, to be more obvious whilst go through the process. You can adjust the stroke width near the outline of your object to get a more accurate result. Precision is not important at this step.Īdjust the stroke width at the settings panel and draw your object by clicking and dragging your mouse, like you paint it with a brush. Once you have adjusted your settings, draw a rough outline of your object and hit the enter key when done. You may wish to copy my settings as shown at the example below and before you start outlining your object make sure that the draw foreground option is selected at the settings. Next you need to select the foreground by using the foreground select tool. This needs to be done, to ensure that there is transparency at this layer. Once you open your image, right click on the image layer and click “ Add Alpha Channel“. If you have a complex background to remove, you need to take a different approach to do your job.įor the second part of this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to remove the background by adding a transparent layer and how to add a layer of your preference. All done! Advanced tutorial: Removing the complex background of an image in GIMP To export the image go to File -> Export As, choose PNG file format and click on Export. I have to remove the blue background in this example. You might have to repeat the steps 2 to step 4 if necessary. Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel Step 4: Delete the background If your image has only one layer (like our example), this background layer has no Alpha channel. It represents the transparency of the image. Step 3: Add TransparencyĪn alpha channel is automatically added into the Channel Dialog as soon as you add a second layer to your image. How to Make a Transparent Background in GIMP Step 1: Open up the image as a layerĪs I have mentioned before, you need to get used to isolate different images and actions as layers. In a later section, I'll share a CLI tool that could help you remove the background automatically. I am going to show you how to do that step-by-step in this GIMP tutorial. While using an online tool like Canva is easier for this purpose, not everyone can opt for the premium plan.Īnd this is where you can use the free and open source tool GIMP to remove the background from an image. This is quite handy in graphic designing. If you put a transparent image on top of a blue image, the image will now have a blue background. When you make the image background transparent, you can use the colour according to the background of the new image. There could be many reasons why you would want to do that.įor example, you don’t like the background, you want to add the image to another background, or you simply want to make the image transparent. Removing the background is one of the most used graphic design procedures. Then conceivably you're going to find that almost everything that fluoresces before a certain age is probably radium. It's very clearly labeled radium but it's not labeled touch it and you'll die they weren't afraid of radium back then. Then yes they did make some actual radium and refilling kits there was once one in the material house that I managed to acquire. Or when you are buying old watchmakers stuff it used to be the feel the hands in they had a wax substance you'd melt it and you put that on the hands and I was thought that was all newer except once again the Geiger counter got really excited so maybe it's not that new. But otherwise it could be a card of hands made last year or whatever you can't tell. If you're looking up brand-new hands on a card with the way they used to come if you move the hand a little bit C can see underneath on usually the radium ones you will see that the paper is a darker color. But slowly bring it up near the packet of brand-new watch hands I have and it starts to pick up where though there is more and more of them in the wood bursts get closer and closer and then it sounds like a rapid machine gun fire.īut it does bring up a problem my brand-new hands that look brand-new how old are they? The fact that the Geiger counter makes an interesting sound tells you that they must be reasonably old. In other words if I turn the Geiger counter on that I have about every 20 to 30 seconds there is a little pop sound some random piece of something flying through space. It's really nice of you get a sensitive Geiger counter with audio. I'm going to invest in a Geiger counter, and vow to never work on radium dials I'm just careful when working on it (seal the dial/hands in a bag) I have a Universal Geneve with radium, but I'm leaving untouched. *With some "more valuable" watches, people want the original patina of the dial and hands. Change the water, do it again until no reading on the geiger. I only use a teaspoon of water each time, then soak it up in to a tissue and bag it.Įverything disposable used gets sealed in plastic bags and disposed in the household waste bin. For hands - I put then in a very small plastic bag/container and a blast in the ultrasonic. To remove dots from the dial I used wet cotton buds. I cover my work surface with cling-film, I wear a mask and latex gloves (probably not needed). Glad I checked.Īfter plenty of research, I decided it's OK to work with radium (I try to avoid the watches*), but taking the following precautions (probably more than I need to) : I have a "Pocket Geiger" so I can check any suspect watches - I didn't expect this mid to late 60s watch to have radium. I sometime work on radium watches- I've just removed the radium from the dial and hands of a 60s Rotary.
